Cyprus Life – in pictures vs Fylde Coast Musings

Our new life in Cyprus began in early March 2004. Originally from a small mill town in Heywood, Lancashire (United Kingdom) we moved overseas spending a glorious 12 years in Limassol. Feel free to read my posts and view my many #photosofCyprus. However in 2016 we had to return permanently to UK due to family ill health. We're now living on the Fylde coast where the river Wyre meets the Irish sea in the north west of England. More places for us to discover as this part of the UK is not so familiar to us either.

Orphanides Supermarket – 11 May 2013

This is how the Limassol (New Port Road) store looked today. Only 1 checkout was open for both the upstairs and downstairs parts of the store…

A very sad sight to behold as a visit to Orphanides when we came on holiday was the “must do” part of our tour of the island.

The news befell us in December 2012:

“ORPHANIDES supermarkets, in the red for over €200m, are to be placed in receivership, the company has announced.

The largest supermarket chain is indebted to banks to the tune of some €140m; additionally it owes suppliers €85m and €10m to other creditors.

The decision for corporate bankruptcy was announced yesterday by Andreas Andronikou, of UK auditing firm UHY Hacker Young.”

  1. don’t think that’s the hotel I am looking to stay at :-))

  2. I have just found this whle searching. It is really sad. I was always visiting Orphanides whle on Cyprus. I am going to visit Cyprus very soon – is there any other supermarket in the same place?

    • Hi there,
As far as I know, no other supermarket has taken the space yet…
Orphanides opened several Express supermarkets (one in the tourist area on the exit road from the highway at Mouttayiakka), one at Skarinou (Limassol/Larnaca district) and one in Kolossi. The 2 in Kolossi and at Skarinou have been replaced by AlfaMega supermarkets and the one near the seafront (not far from Mcdonald’s) is now a Metro supermarket.
The closest big supermarket to the Orphanides by the New Port road roundabout/highway is probably Carrefour which is on the old Paphos/Limassol road… you can exit the highway at the Limassol General Hospital exit then follow the signs towards the industrial area.
