Cyprus Life – in pictures vs Fylde Coast Musings

Our new life in Cyprus began in early March 2004. Originally from a small mill town in Heywood, Lancashire (United Kingdom) we moved overseas spending a glorious 12 years in Limassol. Feel free to read my posts and view my many #photosofCyprus. However in 2016 we had to return permanently to UK due to family ill health. We're now living on the Fylde coast where the river Wyre meets the Irish sea in the north west of England. More places for us to discover as this part of the UK is not so familiar to us either.

Should sexy lingerie stalls be banned at Kataklysmos festivals?

I heard this mentioned on BFBS Radio 1 Cyprus last night as I was driving home from work and it got my curiosity roused as to exactly what was behind this ban…

It seems Larnaca’s Festival of the Flood won’t be shocking passers by with sexy stockings or thongs. Lingerie is banned by the local council.

Some stall holders are rightly upset as they’ve obviously sold their wares in the past on the street market that is usually situated close to Finikoudes at Europe Square.

19th Century picture postcard engraving of Larnaca’s Kataklysmos.

Kataklysmos  is meant to celebrate the descent of the Holy Ghost to the Apostles. It is a Greek Orthodox festival with strong pagan roots focusing primarily on water.

It is also known as the feast of the Pentecost or Whitsun, marked 50 days after Greek Orthodox Easter. The Cyprus public holiday for Kataklysmos 2012 is on Monday 4th June.

More info on this story can be found in the Cyprus Mail.

The postcard image is taken with thanks by Old Salt of My Picture Postcards blogspot.
