Cyprus Life – in pictures vs Fylde Coast Musings

Our new life in Cyprus began in early March 2004. Originally from a small mill town in Heywood, Lancashire (United Kingdom) we moved overseas spending a glorious 12 years in Limassol. Feel free to read my posts and view my many #photosofCyprus. However in 2016 we had to return permanently to UK due to family ill health. We're now living on the Fylde coast where the river Wyre meets the Irish sea in the north west of England. More places for us to discover as this part of the UK is not so familiar to us either.

Getting prepared for shopping. Buying a hat – Egyptian style.

I found this short video again today and thought it may be good practice for our 2 friends who are about to join us on their first visit to Luxor and Aswan later this year.

You can’t shop in Luxor or Aswan without experiencing the “barter”.  At first go it can be an altogether intimidating task but you soon become accustomed to it.

The hardest part is planning your shopping trips otherwise it can get very tiring. And if you don’t join in, the shopkeeper or seller thinks you’re not much fun and gets disgruntled.

The video came back to my attention when visiting an Egyptian forum I haven’t been on for some time. So for those who asked, yes – it’s definitely Sinbads cafe/bar that’s not quite opposite the Luxor Temple and in front of the original Luxor Hotel (we knew it as the Luxor Wena) from many years ago.

How do I know? We were sitting in almost that same spot one night in September 2010 🙂

Our night of adventure in Luxor, Egypt or “what’s the cheapest we can pay for a bottle of Stella Local?”

This photo was taken by Vera – part of our Table for Six group.

Sadly, Barry and Vera went back to live in UK so we’re no longer a party of six when we go out but it’s still our quiz team name.

  1. And that’s exactly how “not” to shop in Luxor.
Whatever you do – don’t agree a price and then pull out more money than you offered to pay….
Have the money you want to pay ready in your pocket. No more and no less.
Easier to pop the money in their hand, take your purchase and away you go.
