Independent Egypt, a set on Flickr. (Click the link to see the slideshow)
Photos taken in May 2007 of our independent trip from Cyprus to Aswan with 4 nights stay at the Isis (Corniche) Hotel, a 3 night cruise to Luxor, 2 nights in the Sonesta St Georges Hotel, the Abela overnight train journey in a sleeper carriage from Luxor to Cairo before taking our return flight back to Larnaca airport.
Our holiday was with our friends Barry & Vera (formerly of Souni in Cyprus) now sadly back in the UK.
They used to make up our “Table For Six” group so if you see references to that on my blog – now you know what it’s all about!
When I say “independent” – I mean we booked this holiday under our own steam via the internet without the safety net of a tour operator or travel agent in Cyprus.
Flights were taken with Egyptair and booked directly on their website. The remaining part of the holiday I searched and sourced to find the best method available to get what we wanted without having to pay 9 months in advance of our travel date.
We paid for the flights in advance as there was no way of getting around that…
I found a company called Memphis Tours based in Cairo as we really wanted to make sure the Presidential Nile Cruise (we sailed on the Odyssey cruise boat) and our Abela overnight sleeper carriage was booked in advance as these had to be coordinated with our flight plans. Mr Memphis offered me exactly the same prices as I had located over the internet and we paid just 25% in advance to secure the reservation. With this in mind, we decided he may as well arrange our hotel accommodation too!
We booked a private minibus transfer to collect us at Aswan airport to take us to the Isis Hotel on the side of the River Nile in Aswan at a cost of around £8 for 4 of us. The local representative from Memphis Tours arrived at our hotel the very next morning as arranged to provide us with the remaining travel vouchers for our trip and we paid him in cash as arranged.
Everything went very smoothly and we had an excellent adventure. I would most certainly recommend Memphis Tours to anyone thinking of holidaying in Egypt.
I hope you enjoy the photos!
