Call to end winter fuel allowance to Cyprus expats…..
“Giving a hand-out to all retirees, regardless of how rich they are, and telling them they have to spend it on heating their home just doesn’t make sense – wherever you live in the world. It is wrong that pensioners who now live in Cyprus and experience milder winters are able to claim this money,” Emma Boon, campaign director at the UK-based Tax Payers’ Alliance, told the Cyprus Mail last night.
“Many pensioners now living in Cyprus and claiming this benefit may feel that they are entitled to it as they have paid into the system for many years, but some very wealthy retirees are entitled to this money too; so it’s not the best way to help those who are genuinely living in fuel poverty.

A new UK charity called Surviving Winter Appeal is asking those who do not rely on the handout to keep warm to donate their allowance to those who do.
According to the British Pensions secretary, “less than one per cent of Winter Fuel Payments are made to people outside the UK, who all qualified for these payments before they moved abroad.”
