Cyprus Life – in pictures vs Fylde Coast Musings

Our new life in Cyprus began in early March 2004. Originally from a small mill town in Heywood, Lancashire (United Kingdom) we moved overseas spending a glorious 12 years in Limassol. Feel free to read my posts and view my many #photosofCyprus. However in 2016 we had to return permanently to UK due to family ill health. We're now living on the Fylde coast where the river Wyre meets the Irish sea in the north west of England. More places for us to discover as this part of the UK is not so familiar to us either.

Cruising – the ideal way to travel

Over the years we’ve done a couple of week long cruises.

One from Limassol in Cyprus for our first wedding anniversary and then the following year, the cruise we had planned again to depart from Limassol got changed completely and we ended by doing a cruise on the First Choice “Island Escape” but embarkation was in Palma, Majorca.

The itinerary was originally due to cruise around the East Med from Limassol with the first stop being Kusidasi to visit the ruins of Ephesus. Sadly, that was not meant to be – partly because the people putting the itinerary together had not done their homework properly and did not realise that the constrained relations between Cyprus and Turkey meant it was not possible to sail directly from one to the next at that time. (This was in 2001).

So instead, we went from Majorca to Malta and onward to Naples. During the night after leaving the port at Naples we passed the amazing sight of Stromboli in total darkness. As I was coming back to the bar from a visit to the powder room I realised that something was looming up on us outside the stairwell window and we were slowing down. Off we rushed on deck and managed to catch some of the eruptions.

We didn’t have our cameras with us but I’ve just found some more recent video footage that I would love to share with you. The whole of the eruptions we saw seemed to be deathly silent – but awesome. This video though from 2008 has lots of sound!🙂

Later in our cruise we visited Florence which was absolutely breathtaking and somewhere we would like to return to. We sat in the Palazzo Vecchio where they filmed Hannibal in which Anthony Hopkins hangs and disembowels Chief Inspector Pazzi by tying him to a trolley and pushing him out of the window of the library building. Three cups of coffee cost us the equivalent of £13 but we did also fall in love with bruschetta and Chianti!

Next stop Port Grimaud, another fascinating little place close to St Tropez in the south of France. A tiny place full of canal waterways and boats! Looks like an ideal lifestyle but positively expensive!

Last stop was a short hop in Menorca where I went and bought myself some Bolle sunglasses, which I still have before we headed back to Palma for our flight back to UK.

Some photos here as a taster but I will dig some more out and will have to scan them into my pc to be able to post them!
