Cyprus Life – in pictures vs Fylde Coast Musings

Our new life in Cyprus began in early March 2004. Originally from a small mill town in Heywood, Lancashire (United Kingdom) we moved overseas spending a glorious 12 years in Limassol. Feel free to read my posts and view my many #photosofCyprus. However in 2016 we had to return permanently to UK due to family ill health. We're now living on the Fylde coast where the river Wyre meets the Irish sea in the north west of England. More places for us to discover as this part of the UK is not so familiar to us either.

The great teddy bear shipwreck mystery

In 1903, 3,000 teddy bears were sent by ship from Germany to America only for them to disappear. Some claim the bears were the first ever made and would now be the most valuable in the world. So what happened to them?

A 1904 Steiff bear - Growler

In the Steiff museum, in the German town of Giengin, the mystery of the missing bears is explained to the visiting children with a tale that they were lost at sea.

The idea of shipwrecked teddy bears captures the imagination, but is it true? Find out here

I’m a bit of a hoarder when it comes to my teddy bears. I brought each and every one with me in boxes when we moved from UK to Cyprus.

My oldest bear is one made by Merrythought (a 1960’s “Cheeky” beary) and stands about 27 inches high. I got him off my parents as a Christmas present when I was about 9yrs old. He growled and had bells in his ears. Sadly, he no longer growls but the bells are still there…

  1. That’s a fascinating story. I wonder if they bears managed to swim ashore and now there’s a huge colony of steiff bears somewhere in America.

  2. Hi,
I have heard the same story, in fact I mention it on
I thought you may like to know that Merrythought are still making bears in England, in fact they have the exclusive rights to make the London 2012 Olympic teddy bears. If I am not mistaken Merrythought do repairs for old bears, so they may be able to help with your growler

    • Hi,

Thanks for the info on my growler. Although being based in Cyprus now, it’s not so easy to do but will keep it in mind should we ever decide to return to live in UK…. I’m sure he will come back with me there!

I did look at your site but couldn’t find any mention of the teddy bear shipwreck?

  3. Hello, I noticed your Merrythought label picture and was wondering if you had any spare Merrythought labels, my old bear lost his and was wondering if you might sell a label if you had any of course. Great post about the Steiff Growler though, very informative.
