Some fantastic images here of Varosha in the Famagusta district of Cyprus.
The village was abandoned in 1974 at the time of the illegal Turkish occupation and is still closed off today.
There are numerous petitions and attempts being made to make it secure and have it reopened. Maybe one day, it will happen….
In its’ hey day, Famagusta was once the gambling capital of the Mediterranean and frequented by many visitors from the Middle East as the party resort. Nowadays, the occupied North of the island is still a gambling resort with many brick and mortar casinos spread around the tourist areas of Kyrenia.
Southern Cyprus, where static casinos are illegal is finding a loophole and retaliating by opening online gambling dens. I suppose it keeps the money in the south of the island rather than giving it away in the north, if nothing else!
